I saw a patient on 5/7/22 and she has lymphedema with ulcer lower leg bilaterally.I applied unna boot to the ulcers.Today 5/13/22,I saw her again,re-evaluated ulcer and reapplied the 2 unna boot. How is the encounter 5/13/22 coded?
The coding for the unna boot can be billed the same way for the May 13th encounter as the May 7th encounter. CPT 29580 does not have a global period associated with it, so there are no modifiers that are required to be appended aside from modifiers that specify laterality. An established patient E&M code could be billed in addition to the bilateral unna boot application. However, an office visit should only be billed if the documentation either demonstrates that another chief complaint was addressed during the visit or if the re-evaluation of the ulcers & lymphedema was more complex than changing the patient’s dressing.
