The Ohio AgriBusiness Association (OABA) Grain Merchandising 101 training course wrapped up this week. The two-day training course took place on March 6 and 13 in Waldo and provided an overview of various segments of the grain market, with a focus on tangible application of the knowledge.
“The Grain Merchandising 101 course was designed to provide our members with real-life information relating to the grain industry,” said Chris Henney, OABA President and CEO. “This two-day course was geared to help participants walk away with information that could be applied in their day-to-day job.”
Joe Brocklesby, with Consolidated Grain & Barge, kicked off the first day with an overview of how the grain markets work and what makes the markets move. James Monger, with Cargill Ag Horizons, shared what types of outside influences can affect the market, and how to prepare for those changes. Tim Shank, with Trupointe Cooperative, Inc., ended the day by leading a hands-on case study with the group.
The second day of training commenced with Shank reviewing the groups’ take-home case studies. James Ramey, retired director of the Ohio Agricultural Statistics Service, provided information about the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), including reports available to agribusinesses through NASS. Jerry Meyer, with Cargill, Inc., presented information relating to technical analysis and fundamental responses to government reports.
