Tattoos, Piercings, and Yoga Pants - Addressing Personal Appearance Issues at Your Dealership

Year: 2019

Original Air Date:  October 10, 2019

Presented by OADA with Fisher Phillips

It wasn't long ago when business attire at all times was considered a must. In 2019 however, the days of neckties and nylons seem to be a thing of the past. While workplace standards on attire may be more relaxed, there are a new set of concerns in the workplace not only about what is appropriate (and inappropriate), but how attire shapes the workplace sulture, and affects the dealership's bottom line. Moreover, it is increasingly difficult for employers to determine where to draw the line on attire when developing policies on personal appearance.

Join Melanie Webber, a Partner at Fisher Phillips Cleveland office, as we navigate through the always awkward issues of personal appearance in the workplace. Over the course of this 60-minute presentation, we will be covering several topics, including:

  • The potential legal issues surrounding personal appearance in the workplace;
  • Guidelines by the EEOC regarding attire at work;
  • Best practices in developing a personal appearance policy;
  • How much discretion an employer has;
  • And more!

Fisher Phillips is OADA's outside counsel for labor and employment matters. Melanie is a frequent speaker for OADA. She serves as chair for the firm's Women's Initiative and Leadership Counsel, and represents and advises clients in all aspects of employment law, including harassment, discrimination, retaliation, and leave-related complaints.
