I was recently in Washington DC, where I was able to advocate for opticianry and small businesses. This advocacy consisted of meeting with congressmen and senators from Ohio, and other states, letting them know how important opticianry is not only to our customers and patients, but also to our economy.
Of course, as we all know, before we can tell anyone how important what we do is, we need to let them know what we do! Opticianry is not difficult to describe, if you keep it simple. My “go to” description of my profession is “We are the pharmacist to the eye doctors. We fill eyewear prescriptions.” And yes, this is a conversation I have each time I meet with legislators, even if I’ve met them before, as reminders are always helpful.
Once I was sure they knew who opticians were, and why we are important, I let them know about three issues that are important to us. The first is the extension of the 20% tax break for businesses. The second is the importance of licensure for opticians, and the third is the Corporate Transparency Act.

Cesar Rodriquez, a respected member and past director of the Opticians
Association of Ohio, embarked on his journey as an optician driven by a
passion for eye care and a steadfast commitment to professional
excellence. His dedication to advancing the standards of opticianry was
evident from his early days in the field.
Through his involvement with the association, he has mentored new
opticians and been involved with initiatives that have significantly
contributed to the profession’s growth and development. His career path
has taken him to new adventures. Cesar has also been involved at a
national level.
Let’s explore beyond Cesar’s beginnings!
How long have you been a licensed optician?
I have been a Licensed Optician for 22 years. I have had the pleasure of gaining experience in a variety of settings. My journey began as an apprentice in a retail setting where Linda Marci Nash took me under her wing. My wife and I started our family and needed a change, so I went into private practice for a number of years- some of those years included an Ophthalmology practice.
Who introduced or mentored you to opticianry?
Linda Marci Nash is who mentored me and laid the foundation for my Opticianry journey. She is the one who showed me the good habits to have and use on a daily basis. Not only did she teach me how, she taught me WHY and that sticks with me to this day. Because of her I am still an optician. I almost left my apprenticeship for what I thought was greener pastures. She sat me down and explained exactly what I would be abandoning. This set the bar for me on what true leadership is.
When were you a Board Director for the Opticians Association of Ohio?
I was a board member from 2019-2023 as the membership committee co-chair and chairman. I had an idea to somehow show appreciation to the apprentices who had recently received state licensure. This is where the pinning ceremony comes in at our state event in Columbus every year. It's our apprentice opticians that will carry us forward if they can get involved with sharing ideas or serving on the association. I continue to volunteer my time to serve fellow Opticians.

“What is an Optician?” We've all heard this question and unfortunately, most of our clients don't have an educated response. We tell our friends, family, and acquaintances what we do, but when you sit down with your clients, do you tell them just how paramount our role in their vision care is?
With the evolution of online retailers, it’s crucial for our community to educate those around us. By branding Opticianry and yourself, customers will be able to build a relationship of trust and knowledge that will keep them coming back. Let patients know exactly what your title means. Let the community know what differentiates your services from opening a box and wearing glasses they ordered online! The truth is consumers today are constantly bombarded with information and advertising. The job of marketing Opticianry is to make people care in a way that matters to them, not just to you.
Branding yourself in a way that educates the public on just how critical Opticians are will only nourish your relationship with them. Our wonderful OAO web page has several resources available to get that conversation started. Rock that Optician logo on your shirt or car window, have reading cards made that explain what we do, or post videos on your social media accounts. Check out some of our resources below!

The Ohio Apprentice Interactive Workshop will be on the road again Sunday August 4. Instructors Cynthia Lohman and Diana Walter will be heading to Walman Optical Lab in Toledo to guide emerging apprentice opticians in building their knowledge and skills with lecture and hands-on instruction. The laboratory setting will also give students an insider view to the behind the scenes workings of a lab, in addition to the curriculum being taught. Topics being discussed at the workshop include eye anatomy, optical formula, correct fitting techniques for lenses and frames in addition to using the lensometer. Response to the workshops over the past two years has been an affirmation that apprentices are wanting and needing extra guidance to becoming the most successful professionals possible. Stay up to date on upcoming workshop dates on The Opticians Association of Ohio website at OAO.org.
