OAPA and IAPA are proud to offer the Commercial Driver Medical Examiner (CDME) course for those healthcare providers who wish to become Certified Medical Examiners. Those providers who perform Commercial Motor Vehicle physicals will need to be Certified Medical Examiners and registered with the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME) by May 21, 2014, in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations. FMCSA requires that those wishing to be CDME must complete an accredited training program, pass a NRCME Certification Examination, and officially register with the NRCME.
This "ME" training course conforms to FMCSA’s training curriculum modules and topics on regulations and guidelines for conducting CMV driver medical examinations. FMCSA regulations and guidelines are reviewed regularly and the training is updated as required. This course was last updated on Nov. 13, 2013.
The OAPA/IAPA’s CDME course is open to all medical professionals who perform CMV medical exams and will prepare medical examiners to:
- Apply knowledge of FMCS’a driver physical qualifications standards and advisory criteria to findings gathered during the driver’s medical examination
- Make sound determinations of the driver’s medical and physical qualifications for safely operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) in interstate commerce.
Participants should have a sound knowledge and training in obtaining medical histories, performing physical exams, determining diagnoses, developing treatment plans, and medical management. Information from FMCSA’s Medical Examiner Handbook on these skills will be included in pre-course materials and post-course materials. The course will focus on issues/conditions specific to the commercial driver.
The course will consist of 9 modules, with each module content focusing on the core curriculum material from FMCSA guidelines for training. Pre- and post-course material will also be provided to help prepare the participant for the Certification Examination. The format will include lecture, discussion and case study.
This program has been reviewed and is approved for a maximum of 7.75 hours of AAPA Category 1 CME credit by the Physician Assistant Review Panel. Physician assistants should claim only those hours actually spent participating in the CME activity.
This program was planned in accordance with AAPA's CME Standards for Live Programs and for Commercial Support of Live Programs.
All CMEs approved by the Physician Assistant Review Panel are also approved by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
Physicians and Chiropractors should check with their accrediting organizations to verify CME credit.
Registration for this 7.75 hour course is $350. Registration includes course materials, snacks, lunch, CME credits, pre- and post-course materials.
The NRCME Examination is not offered onsite in conjunction with the IAPA CDME course. The FMCSA has set up testing centers, and information on those centers and on the FMCSA and the NRCME is available online at the NRCME website.
