OAPA Offers Prescription-Discount Card

OAPA has partnered with NeedyMeds, a national nonprofit organization, to offer Ohioans a free prescription-discount card that will help decrease the cost of their medications. The discount card can be used by consumers regardless of their income level or whether or not they have insurance and can save them a maximum of 80 percent off the cost of their medications.

Consumers simply show their card to the pharmacist when they pick up their prescriptions and the pharmacist will apply the discount. The cards are available for free and can be obtained from OAPA later this Spring or downloaded immediately at www.ohiopa.com. There is no application fee or registration process and consumers do not need to provide a medical history, social security number or other private information to receive the benefits.

The card is accepted at more than 61,000 pharmacies throughout the country including Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid and other regional chains and local stores. The card may be used by consumers who have no insurance and by those who decide not to use their insurance – for example, if the drug is not covered under their plan, the co-pay or deductible is too high, the cap has been reached or it they are in the “Medicare “donut hole.”

Anyone. The OAPA drug discount card is free and open to all Ohioans. There are no income, insurance or residency requirements, and no fees or registration process is needed to use the card. One card can be shared with friends and family members, or patients can print their own (See Link Above).

Where can patients use the OAPA drug discount card?

The drug discount card is accepted at over 60,000 pharmacies nationwide, including Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, and other regional chains and local stores. To locate pharmacies in your area that will accept the OAPA/NeedyMeds card, please visit the NeedyMeds website www.needymeds.org/drugcard/index.htm and search for participating pharmacies by zip code.

Can patients use the OAPA drug discount card in conjunction with insurance?

No, patients cannot combine the card with insurance. The card can, however, be used instead of insurance if the insurance has no drug coverage, there is a high deductible, there is a low medicine cap that has been met, there is a high copay and the card offers a better price, of if a consumer is in the Medicare Part D “donut hole.”

How do consumers use the OAPA drug discount card?

To use the OAPA drug discount card, an Ohio consumer simply presents the discount card to his or her pharmacist along with the desired prescription, at which point the pharmacist will tell the consumer how much can be saved using the card.   For more information about the OAPA Prescription Drug Discount Card you can call the OAPA Office, or to download a copy of the card (See Link Above).   For more information about medical assistance programs, please visit www.needymeds.org
