Invasive wood boring insects can have a tremendous impact on our forests. Reminiscent of the emerald ash borer, the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) presents a new threat. The ALB has been found in a small area in southern Ohio, and agencies are working to find, contain and eradicate the beetle. All areas of Ohio are at risk, and early detection is key. This workshop will equip arborists, natural resource professionals and homeowners – anyone who routinely inspects or maintains trees – with the knowledge needed to recognize the signs and symptoms of ALB. Topics of the workshop will include:
•Pathways for introduction of woodboring insects•ALB detection history and current updates in the U.S.•Biology, host plants, signs and symptoms of ALB•How to report a new ALB find•Updates on other invasive pests of concern. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to practice their ALB detection skills in an outdoor ALB training course at The Dawes Arboretum.
