Fire Chief

Orange Township

Situated in Delaware County and directly north of Columbus, Ohio, the state’s capital city, Orange Township, formally founded as a township in 1816, is one of Ohio’s fastest growing jurisdictions and one of 18 townships in Delaware County. Early residents were attracted to the area for its beautiful surroundings, proximity to nearby Columbus, and the business prospects of Delaware – factors that still attract residents today. Orange Township is home to two fire stations staffed by qualified, trained, and experienced fire and EMS professionals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Township is opening its search for a new Fire Chief to replace the retiring Fire Chief following his 16 years of progressive service to the Township. Our next Fire Chief will be responsible for approximately 70 full-time, part-time, and administrative professionals who work in one of the most in-demand and competitive township fire programs.

The Fire Chief must be able to manage an active, visible department while building professional, collaborative, mission-focused relationships within the Township and throughout the community. Working collaboratively with and at the overarching direction of the Township Administrator, the new Fire Chief will be charged with building a diverse and inclusive department, identifying and implementing best-in-class developmental opportunities to build a model fire department, and serving as a key administrator between the collective bargaining unit and the Township to ensure that the interests of all parties are best served. Extensive knowledge of contemporary principles and practices in fire command, prevention and operations, and public safety, as well as demonstrated leadership that focuses on building a diverse and engaged team are critical to position success.

This non-CBA position is responsible for directing all Fire Prevention, Suppression and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) of the Township by developing community risk management strategies, planning and implementing policies, recommending strategies, training and evaluating personnel and preparing and monitoring budgets.

In addition to leading the department and performing all related duties as outlined in Ohio Revised Code Section 505.38, key position requirements include, but are not limited to the following:

• Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate all fire prevention, suppression and EMS programs, service delivery, and personnel.
• Assist in developing and maintaining the Township’s Emergency Operations Plan and supervise emergency management activities including preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation
• Plan, develop and implement strategic goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and guidelines and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, and coordination with other internal and external stakeholders to ensure near- and long-term viability of the department.
• Prepare, administer, and monitor the department budget.
• Perform research, analyze findings, prepare recommendations, and report on the effectiveness and efficiency of operations to Township Administrator, Trustees, and other key stakeholders.
• Develop and oversee fire and EMS data and records management.
• Oversee establishment, planning, and supervision of employee training and evaluation programs, including: supervising, scheduling, training, directing, counseling, disciplining and evaluating subordinates. Enforces disciplinary measures.
• Recommend to the Board of Township Trustees and Township Administrator the appointment, promotion, suspension, or dismissal of others.
• Participate in and attend meetings of fire chiefs; fire service professional organizations; task forces; and local, regional, state, and federal agencies and organizations.
• Stay current with contemporary principles and practices for fire command, operations, administration, EMS trends, leadership, and other topics important to the operations of the fire and EMS department by attending training and conferences.
• Assist other Township representatives in the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements and the addressing of other issues relative to the unionized work force.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree or other advanced education in the area of fire science, management, public or business administration, or a similar field to complement at least 10 years of progressively responsible command and management experience.

Additional requirements include:
• Fire Chief certification (or out of state equivalent)
• Valid Ohio Fire Fighter II certificate.
• Ohio EMT (EMT-B) certificate (minimum).
• Valid and unencumbered State of Ohio driver’s license with ability to meet insurance carrier requirements.
• Eligibility for fidelity bond at ordinary rates.
• Ability to satisfactorily pass a drug screen, physical examination, background investigation, and any related valid and reliable assessments.
• High school diploma or GED, required

Selected candidates must also possess or be willing to obtain:
• Fire Officer IV certification or equivalent education
• Fire Instructor certification
• Inspector certification
