Goal of the Seminar: To provide seminar attendees a current look at the status of the laws and rules that they will use to educate and supervise apprentice embalmers and funeral directors.

8:30 a.m.                                 Introduction / Scope of the Day

 

8:30 – 9:30 a.m. (60mins)          Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors

            Program Description:  The Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers will instruct on a topic or topics of the Board’s choosing.

            Presenter: Representative of the Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors

 

9:30 – 10:00 a.m. (30mins)        Department of Veterans Affairs

            Program Description:  Seminar participants will receive an update on some of the services and benefits that are provided to the families of deceased veterans by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

            Presenter: Don Ferfolia

 

10:00 – 10:15 a.m.                  Break

 

10:15 – 10:45 a.m. (30mins)      Vital Statistics / Death Certificates

            Program Description:  The current laws regarding vital statistics will be presented.  Some topics may include EDRS, filing timelines, affidavits of correction, and fetal death certificates.

Presenter: Mark Kassouf, Assistant State Registrar, State of Ohio

 

10:45 – 11:15 a.m. (30mins)      OSHA

            Program Description:  This section of the seminar will discuss the relationship between OSHA and funeral services.  Some items that will be discussed with the participants include the Bloodborne Pathogen Rule, formaldehyde reporting requirements, and general safety concerns in the funeral home environment.

11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.(60mins)Funeral Service Law Scenarios – Part I

            Program Description:  This section of the seminar will use small fact patterns and discussion among the participants of the seminar to illustrate and inform them about the current state funeral service law in Ohio.  Some topics include:

  • Cremation Law in Ohio
  • Federal Trade Commission
  • Ohio Funeral Service Law & Apprentices

12:15 – 1:00 p.m.                    Lunch

 

1:00 – 2:00 p.m. (60mins)          Funeral Service Law Scenarios – Part II

Program Description:  This section of the seminar will use small fact patterns and discussion among the participants of the seminar to illustrate and inform them about the current state funeral service law in Ohio.  Some topics include:

  • Preneed Law in Ohio
  • Ohio Funeral Service Law – General Topics

2:00 – 3:30 p.m. (90mins)          Liturgical / Non-Liturgical Services and Roles & Duties of The Master Funeral Director

            Program Description:  The first part of this program will focus on some new evolutions in the types of services that families are beginning to request from funeral service providers. The remaining portion of the program will focus on the interaction between a Master Funeral Director and Embalmer and the Apprentice during the apprenticeship period that will allow an individual to successfully transition from being an apprentice to a funeral service practitioner.
