Funeral Director/Embalmer Apprentice

Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Inc.

We own and operate three funeral home chapels and a crematory in Northwest Ohio. The apprentice will learn and be involved in all aspects of funeral service from embalming and making funeral arrangements, to making removals, record keeping, working visitation and funerals, as well as maintenance, cleaning and upkeep of the facilities.

Education and Experience: Applicant must be able to meet Ohio’s Requirements for Apprenticeship. Funeral service experience, although a plus, is not required.

Duties and Reponsibilities: With time, the apprentice will: •Meet with families of the deceased to discuss funeral arrangements and requests. •Explain pricing and product information for caskets and flowers to family and/or friends. •Order casket, flowers, and other necessities for funeral and memorial services. •Make arrangements for pallbearers and other participants in the funeral. •Oversees preparation and embalming of the deceased prior to the funeral. •Ensures that set-up for the memorial service, wake, and funeral adheres to families’ wishes. •Maintains cleanliness and organization of the funeral home. •Maintains positive relationships with vendors, church officials, and cemetery directors.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: •Demonstrate strong organizational skills. •Exhibit patience, empathy, and compassion. •Can communicate calmly and kindly with bereaved family and friends. •Pay close attention to detail. •In Time, Demonstrate familiarity with funeral home management software. •Exhibit strong leadership skills. •In Time, Be familiar with proper etiquette and procedure for a range of religious or cultural funeral services. •Possess strong listening skills. •In Time, Possess knowledge of embalming and burial services.
