OOA Signs Letter on Medical Board's Monitoring Program

(May 3, 2017) As part of the Medical Association Coalition (MAC), the Ohio Osteopathic Association has been working with the State Medical Board on rules for handling physicians with mental or physical illnesses without being subjected to a formal disciplinary process.

The MAC sent a letter, April 24, to the Board outlining problems with the proposed confidential monitoring program. The Coalition is concerned because the rules, as drafted: (1) determine entry into the program based on diagnosis or condition and not conduct; (2) the defined process is not truly confidential; and (3) the process could aggravate existing mental or physical health conditions without providing adequate due process to the physician. .

In addition to the OOA, the letter was signed by 11 other medical and health organizations.
