According to a new map released by the National Center for the Analysis of Healthcare Data (NCAHD), colleges of osteopathic medicine and osteopathic physicians are making a substantial contribution to health care in the Appalachian region.

Of the 5,126 DOs practicing in the Appalachian region, 71 percent practice in rural areas; 64 percent practice in primary care specialties; and 31 percent are in a federally-designated medically underserved area.  There are nine osteopathic medical schools in Appalachia, including Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens.
