In case you missed it: Mark Hurst, MD appointed as Medical Director of Ohio Department of Health

June 13, 2019 (COLUMBUS)– Ohio Department of Health Director Amy Acton, MD, MPH, has announced the appointment of Mark Hurst, MD, to the position of medical director.

Previously, Dr. Hurst worked at the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OMHAS) for more than 26 years, most recently holding the positions of director and medical director of the agency.

“Dr. Hurst brings a wealth of knowledge and medical expertise to ODH,” said Dr. Acton. “His experience working in mental health and addiction services will be invaluable to our agency.”

While at OMHAS, he served as the clinical lead for the department, including the supervision and leadership of Ohio’s six regional psychiatric hospitals and all drug and alcohol recovery services in the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections.

“Dr. Hurst will spearhead an increased emphasis on behavioral health to the broader healthcare system, as well as tackle other important public health issues such as the opioid crisis, suicide prevention, infant mortality, health disparities and the impact of trauma,” said Dr. Acton.

Dr. Hurst is a native of Zanesville, OH, and a graduate of both Muskingum College and the Medical College of Ohio. He completed his medical residency training at the University of Michigan and at The Ohio State University.
