Sinema May Seek Tweaks to Manchin-Schumer Deal

The conservative Democrat holds much power and often aligns with the GOP

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) holds the pivotal vote on the massive health care, climate and tax deal cut by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV); she is reportedly weighing using that leverage to push for changes to the package.

According to Punchbowl News, Sinema wants to scale back a provision on “carried interest” that’s designed to raise $14 billion from private equity and hedge fund managers. Sinema also wants some changes to the corporate minimum tax, a crucial piece of the package.

In the evenly divided Senate, Democrats will need all 50 votes from their caucus to pass the legislation through the reconciliation process as Republican senators are almost certainly going to be united in opposition.

Sinema was reportedly not consulted as Schumer and Manchin struck a deal though Sinema was a key architect of the prescription drug reform piece of the package and has in the past voiced support for a corporate minimum tax.

“We’re in touch with Senator Sinema,” Schumer told reporters this week. “We’re in touch with all of the members. I’m very hopeful we’re all going to stay united and pass this bill.”
