The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant “for crimes against humanity and war crimes” over Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip.
The court also issued a warrant for a Hamas military leader, Mohammed Deif, who was killed in an airstrike in Gaza in July, according to Israeli officials. Prosecutors issued the warrants because they were not able to confirm whether he is dead or alive, the chamber said.
The ICC’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, said he was seeking the arrest warrants in May, along with warrants for senior Hamas leaders. Although Israel is not a party to the Rome Statute, upon which the court was founded, the warrants are a public rebuke of Israel’s conduct during the war and require enforcement by the court’s 124 member states.
