House to Vote on Short-Term CR but Shutdown Continues

It would reopen all shuttered government agencies through February

House Democrats agreed to vacate a voice vote today on legislation to reopen the government through Feb. 28 and allow for a recorded vote next week after the holiday weekend.

The short-term continuing resolution to reopen all shuttered government agencies through February sailed through the House on a voice vote this afternoon but Republicans said they wanted their opposition to the bill on record since it does not include any funding for President Donald Trump’s U.S.-Mexico border wall. House Democrats have introduced measures almost daily that would reopen the government, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said that strategy will continue next week.

The latest partisan sparring ensures the partial government shutdown, now in its 27^th day, will drag into next week at least. Both chambers have agreed to stay in session next week instead of taking a previously-scheduled recess.

Pelosi hinted today that Democrats will introduce legislation next week that addresses border security. It won’t be money for a wall though, she said. “This has to be evidence-based, not notion-mongered,” she said.

Trump has refused to consider any legislation to reopen the government that does not include at least $5.7 billion in funding for his wall.
