Wake-up Call: Later School Day Urged in Ohio

Lawmaker calls it a "public health issue"

In the wake of California’s new law prohibiting high schools from starting earlier than 8:30 a.m., an Ohio legislator from Cleveland has proposed a similar law. Some education officials warn that such a change could have costly effects on school districts and disrupt busing and families’ after-school schedules.

Years ago, Hilliard parents spent months lobbying successfully for starting school 25 minutes later.

Leslie Drexel, 43, who helped lead the charge, said the work was worth it because those minutes make a big difference for Hilliard middle schoolers. They’re in their third year of starting school later — this year at 7:55 a.m. instead of 7:30.
