Trudeau Urges Canadians to Remain Vigilant Amid Bleak COVID-19 Reports

The pandemic could infect between one and 10 percent of Canadians

As Canadians prepare for a holiday weekend separated from family and friends, they are getting the clearest sense yet of the grim toll the coronavirus will take — in lives and livelihoods — over the months until a vaccine is developed.

Public health officials warned Thursday that even with strong control measures, the pandemic could infect between one and 10 percent of Canadians and cause between 4,400 and 44,000 deaths.

The same morning, Statistics Canada revealed that in the span of a month, the labor market lost more than a million jobs — more than one in 20 positions across the country — due in large part to the forced shutdowns of non-essential businesses. Moving forward, the numbers are widely expected to get worse.
