Doctors Navigate Reopenings
As doctors reopen their practices, they’ll be navigating a patchwork of state laws and regulations—especially if they offer elective procedures, which health authorities largely required be put on hold when COVID-19 hit.

The American Medical Association’s (AMA) advocacy arm has released a fact sheet to help doctors make reopening plans consistent with the regulations. As the fact sheet notes, guidelines released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ultimately put these decisions in the domain of state and local governments.

“One of the challenging issues for physicians and facilities has been distinguishing between procedures that need to be postponed from those that they need to provide,” the document says. AMA has also published an alphabetical compilation of state directives on non-urgent procedures (one for Alabama through Mississippi and one for Nebraska through West Virginia.
