Supporting Ohio's Statewide Mask Mandate

The Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA) supports the announcement by Governor Mike DeWine of a mandatory mask/facial covering requirement throughout the state of Ohio in order to slow the ongoing community spread of COVID-19. The instructions regarding the use of masks and social distancing are based on the best scientific evidence we have at this time about the virus which causes COVID-19.

Ohio physicians and the healthcare community play an important role in encouraging patients and the public to follow these guidelines, as well as other guidelines from state and local health officials and medical professionals. Several weeks ago, OSMA, in partnership with several other physician and healthcare organizations, launched the Doctor’s Orders: MaskPlus6 campaign to encourage Ohioans to wear masks and practice 6-foot separation social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19. As part of the campaign, OSMA and partner organizations have encouraged both physicians and members of the public to share pictures of themselves wearing masks on social media using the hashtag #MaskPlus6.

OSMA, on behalf of the thousands of physicians, medical residents, and medical students we represent, urges Ohioans to do their part to help keep as many individuals healthy as possible. By following the guidelines and orders set forth by our state and local health officials, we can all work together to promote safety and well-being of our families, friends, neighbors, and others in our communities across the state.
