Year-End Practice Planning Tips & Document Retention
As the end of 2020 approaches, many practices have questions about their files and record retention. As a reminder, you can access the OSMA’s Medical Records Toolkit for tips on record retention, storage and what to do with records if you are thinking about retiring or closing your office.
- Access the Medical Records Toolkit in OSMA's online library.
- We also recommend that you contact your professional liability carrier for advice on medical record retention. For example, you can find Medical Record Retention information from OSMA’s medical malpractice insurance partner—The Doctor’s Company.
- The American Academy of Family Physicians has provided a convenient checklist for closing a practice (also available at aafp.org).
If you have questions about retention requirements for other practice records, we suggest you contact your accountant or business advisor.
No matter the stage of your medical career, you will find value and professional resources with OSMA. Together, we can help advance the way you practice medicine.
