“Read Twice, Click Once” - Business Email Compromise

The expression “measure twice, cut once” is meant to double check your measurements before cutting the board.  “Read Twice, Click Once” is sound advice when dealing with email communication.  Because email continues to be the primary vehicle for electronic communications, the growing and evolving trend of account takeover and fraud via Business Email Compromise (BEC) is of great concern to consumers, businesses and law enforcement.

Between October 2013 and May 2018, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) identified over 78,000 incidents with losses totaling over $12.5 Billion dollars.  Business Email Compromise, also know as Email Account Compromise, is a sophisticated attempt to target, not only businesses, but consumers as well.

While commonly used for unauthorized transfers, the scam can also be used to compromise business email account as well as personal information.

This session will highlight:

  • Methods used to perpetrate the fraud (not all are via email)
  • Controls to help you detect and prevent the attempts
  • Tips to educate your staff, businesses and consumers
