I am a 39-year-old survivor after a major cardiac arrest in 1998 at age 35. I was at home about 9:00 p.m. after playing basketball at my local church when my wife noticed that I did not look or feel well. After I collapsed on the bed complaining of nausea and chest pain, she called 9-1-1. The paramedics rushed me to the hospital but before they could get me hooked up to the monitors in the hospital I went unconscious and into a full cardiac arrest. I was shocked with the defibrillator three times before my heart went back into normal sinus rhythm and I awoke. The doctor said that I was a very lucky man. "Only about 20% of the people that have that massive of a heart attack survive." I am so thankful for the defibrillator which saved my life at age 35 and allowed me to see my daughter graduate from high school and spend the rest of my life enjoying my wife and two other boys.
