Pulpit Supply 'did you knows'

Every congregation needs someone to fill in for the pastor from time-to-time.  Some congregations rely on our Pulpit Supply Coordinator to provide a pastor multiple times a month because the congregation is in the process of calling a new pastor or cannot afford to hire a part-time or full-time pastor. Whatever your situation, below are some 'did you know's' regarding the pulpit supply process you'll want to make note of before calling our Pulpit Supply Coordinator, Sr. Sally Burk.

1. Priority for pulpit supply is given to congregations in the call process who do not have an interim pastor.

2. If your pastor goes on vacation, you should contact pastors in your area to see if someone is available to fill in while your pastor gets some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Sr. Sally may be able to help direct you to retired pastors who may be available, but as noted in item #1, vacation requests are not her priority.

3. Requests for pulpit supply should be made 30 days in advance. Our list is limited, so it may take Sr. Sally a while before she can locate a pastor who is available to lead worship and participate in fellowship after the service(s) for your congregation.

4. The current pulpit supply rates are:

  • One Service $175 plus Mileage
  • Two Services $200 plus Mileage
  • Three Services $225 plus Mileage
  • Over Three Services $25 per Service Added to $225
  • Educational Services $50
  • Additional Services Provided by an Ordained Pastor $50
  • Mileage is the current IRS mileage reimbursement rate

5. The Southern Ohio Synod mission territory is blessed to have Sr. Sally Burk as our coordinator. Very few other synods have a Pulpit Supply Coordinator and instead provide a list for congregations of rostered ministers open to providing pulpit supply.
