New research shows that simple outreach from instructors can improve student performance, from The Chronicle.
The Chronicle’s Teaching newsletter reported on a paper showing that something as simple as a regular email from the instructor can improve student engagement and performance. The study by Carrell & Kurlaender examined personalized messages that gave feedback on what students could do to improve course performance or how to access outside help for studying, etc. They found that these emails had an impact on the entire population of students, as well as a statistically significant impact for underrepresented minority students. Not only did students do better in the class with the instructor-sent emails, they did better in other classes, too!
