Use your plumbing experience to protect the health and safety of the Richland County community.
Richland Public Health is seeking a knowledgeable, dependable plumbing professional to join our Environmental Health team. We prefer a candidate who already holds a full Ohio Board of Building Standards Plumbing Inspector Certification and is prepared to perform the complete range of inspection duties independently.
Not fully certified yet? We will also consider qualified candidates who hold an Initial (Trainee) Plumbing Inspector Certification—or who have the plumbing trade experience required to obtain one—and are committed to completing the full certification process.
What You’ll Do:
- Review plans and specifications for compliance with the Ohio Plumbing Code.
- Inspect plumbing and drainage installations throughout Richland County.
- Identify code violations and issue appropriate correction notices or orders.
- Help contractors, property owners, staff, and members of the public understand applicable plumbing requirements.
- Maintain accurate inspection records, enter program data, and prepare required reports.
- Contribute to the work of Richland Public Health’s Environmental Health division.

- The ability to interpret plumbing codes, plans, and technical drawings.

Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least six years of qualifying plumbing trade experience.
- Current full Ohio Board of Building Standards Plumbing Inspector Certification preferred.
Candidates may also be considered if they:
- Hold a current BBS Initial (Trainee) Plumbing Inspector Certification; or Are eligible to obtain the Initial (Trainee) certification based on their qualifying plumbing trade experience.
A candidate hired through the trainee pathway must obtain the required Initial (Trainee) certification before independently conducting plumbing inspections or serving as the inspector of record.
All requirements for full BBS Plumbing Inspector Certification must be completed within two years of hire.
The selected candidate must also:
- Possess and maintain a valid Ohio driver’s license and remain insurable under Richland Public Health’s vehicle insurance policy.
- Be able to perform the physical responsibilities of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
These responsibilities include climbing ladders, accessing roofs and confined areas, lifting covers and equipment, and working indoors and outdoors year-round.
This position has a regular daytime schedule: Monday–Thursday: 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Friday: 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Occasional early-morning, evening, weekend, or holiday work may be required.
