Webinar: Physician Suicide Awareness

Wellness initiatives to improve the physical and mental health of physicians often have components to address the fatal outcome of suicide. The effectiveness of these programs will depend on accurate understanding of the complex factors contributing to suicide. To clarify these factors, Physician Suicide Awareness reviews how people to respond to suicide death, data related physician suicide, and efforts to answer to the question, “Why do people die by suicide?”

David H. Rosmarin, PhD, is director of the Spirituality and Mental Health Program at McLean Hospital and an assistant professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He supervises the provision of spiritually integrated services in clinical programs throughout the hospital’s divisional structure, and collaborates with laboratories to study the clinical relevance of spirituality to anxiety, mood, psychotic, substance use, and other disorders.

Critical Care Doctors Are in Crisis Who’s Caring for the ICU Physicians?

"In a recent national survey of roughly 12,000 doctors, more than half of critical care physicians reported burnout. Staffing and personal protective equipment (PPE) shortages, the death toll, personal safety concerns, a feeling of inadequacy in providing emotional support to patients and their families—all contribute to a wave of difficulty that, deep into the summer of 2021, continues to build." Assessment of Risk Factors for Suicide Among US Health Care Professionals

This 2020 cohort study looked at 170K individuals who died by suicide across 14 years and parsed out the data on healthcare professionals. Compared to the general population, researchers found that risk factors for physician suicide include older age and job problems. Read more
