Planner II

Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC)

The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) is accepting applications for the Planner II position. The Planner II is a mid-level position and MVRPC is looking for a well-rounded planner with a combination of a solid educational foundation, relevant experience, positive attitude, passion for public service, and readiness to contribute to our diverse regional and community planning projects.

MVRPC serves an innovative multi-county region of approximately one million people in the area surrounding Dayton, OH (southwest Ohio). As a Regional Planning Commission (RPC), the agency conducts regional planning activities and provides planning services to local jurisdictions. MVRPC also functions as the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), a designation that provides federal funding for long range transportation planning and investments.

The selected individual is a key member of the Department of Community and Regional Planning comprised of planners and GIS professionals. As a member of the team, the Planner II will be working on: long- and short-term planning and GIS initiatives; planning research projects that examine interrelated demographic, social, and economic issues; community land use and comprehensive planning projects in partnership with local member jurisdictions; planning consultation and data services to local jurisdictions for their successful planning and policy development efforts; and technical support to the agency’s transportation planning team.

Our Community and Regional Planning Department is very active in improving our local communities and our region. The recent innovative and award winning work conducted by the department includes: the Regional Profile Series on a variety of topics including equity, arts and culture, housing, diversity, transportation, and environmental quality; the Miami Valley Data Commons; and the Miami Valley Geo-Spark, a GIS Open Data Hub site.  The 2015 Jefferson Township Future Land Use Strategic Plan and the Greene County Perspectives 2040 Future Land Use Plan update project currently underway are good examples of MVRPC’s partnership efforts working with our member local governments. Lastly, the department works with the Montgomery County Land Bank to spur neighborhood redevelopment in our communities.

MVRPC is looking for a candidate who possesses: 1) knowledge of the principles and practices of city and regional planning; 2) professional and practical experience in conducting land use planning and/or comprehensive planning; 3) effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills for working with team members and the general public; 4) critical thinking and analytical skills for logical and strategic problem solving and decision making processes; 5) strong research, data analysis, data visualization, graphic design, and writing skills; and 6) strong technical proficiency in the use of MS Office, Adobe CS, GIS, and Tableau. 

Minimum qualifications for this Planner II position include: Bachelor's Degree in planning, urban studies, geography, or related field with a minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experiences in city and regional planning, not including internships. Master’s Degree and/or AICP Certification is a plus.
