Intersections, Transitions, and Silenced Voices
The Performance Studies & Autoethnography Interest Group invites submissions for the 2023 Central States Communication Association convention to be held in St. Louis, MO, March 29-April 2, 2023. The deadline for submissions of Friday, October 7, 2022, 11:59PM, CDT.
Our interest group focuses on two primary areas of scholarship: Performance Studies and Autoethnography. We view performance as a method of communication inquiry and as an embodied way of knowing and presenting information. We view autoethnography as a critically-engaged orientation toward scholarship located in embodied experience. We invite scholars to attend to these interests at multiple levels, including the intersections of performance and autoethnography. We welcome a variety of submission formats, including individual papers and performances, performances panels, paper panels, and spotlight sessions.
We especially encourage members to address issues related to the convention theme “Intersections, Transitions, and Silenced Voices”, explicitly inviting creativity and social justice-oriented submissions, including poetry, performance art, film, collage, and written manuscripts. We believe that this year’s theme securely enables our division to lead the conference by considering innovative opportunities around content and form. For example, how can silenced, disenfranchised, and minoritized voices be integrated into panel, performance, and paper submissions? What interdisciplinary intersections can we model? How does poetry, performance, and autoethnography create avenues for diversity work? What types of embodied transitions –transitions from graduate student to faculty member, from culture to culture, transitioning toward different ideological commitments – should be theorized? How can we take up and decolonize conference spaces?
We are excited to see what other connections members might make with the theme. As a general rule, we encourage efforts at co-sponsorship between various interest groups, when appropriate, as well as creating panels across academic institutions.

The interest group would also like to invite members to submit nominations for a variety of awards: Top Paper, Top Debut Paper, The Outstanding Article or Book Chapter in Performance Studies, The Outstanding Article or Book Chapter in Autoethnography, and The Outstanding Book in Performance Studies/Autoethnography. The outstanding article/book chapter awards are intended to reward high-quality scholarship published within the preceding two calendar years (2021 & 2022). Please submit a copy of the article, along with a letter of support, and specify whether the article is to be considered for the Performance Studies or Autoethnography Award. The Outstanding Book in Performance Studies/Autoethnography is intended to reward exceptional book-length work published within the preceding five calendar years (2017-2022). Please submit a copy of the book (electronic preferred), along with a letter of support to meggiemapes@ku.edu with the award in the subject line. All nominations and submissions should be directed to the interest group chair. Additionally, The Outstanding Scholar in Performance Studies & Autoethnography rewards a scholar who has made significant contributions to performance studies and/or autoethnographic scholarship and has been a significant contributor to/from the Central States region.
To submit to the Performance Studies and Autoethnography interest group, please utilize the CSCA Online Submission System. For individual paper submissions, only completed papers will be accepted. For debut papers (meaning the first presentation in the interest group), please write “DEBUT” on the title page. Please anonymize all author details in competitive papers.
Discussion Panels and Performance/Spotlight Panels will require a description of the panel (which goes in the program) of no more than 75 words and a panel rationale (250 words max). In addition to the rationale, please use the rationale section to include a bit about what each panelist will contribute to the panel. Similarly, Paper Panels will require the 75-word description as well as a 400-word rationale in which each paper can be briefly described.
Requests for technology must be made at the time of submission.
