Call for Submissions

Before you get on that sleigh and ride away for the holiday break - don't forget to submit your semester work to the James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference! 

Faculty, you should offer your students cookies and hot chocolate in exchange for their submission!

Conference Theme: TRANSITIONS

Plan to participate in and attend the 2nd annual James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference to be held in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at the Royal Sonesta Hotel Boston April 27th and 28th, 2011. ECA’s convention theme, “Transitions” promises great opportunities for us to participate in meaningful, scholarly dialogue over the course of the convention.  “Transition” evokes thoughts of change, movement, passages, and journeys.  Although not all transitions are pleasant ones, they often bring us greater enlightenment and renewal.

This theme invites ECA members and others to critically and productively examine not only specific transitions, but also the process of transition itself. Is all transition inherently communicative in nature? Are transitions themselves the mechanisms for invoking change in communication? To what extent can manipulation of the communication context of a transition shape that very transition? What are the outcomes of transitions? What are the by-products? What role does technology play in social, personal, intellectual, or creative transitions?

The USC Planners (Dr. Susan Jasko and a team of students from California University of PA’s Department of Communication Studies) are open to suggestions and ideas as well as queries about forms of submission and presentation.

Papers for the Undergraduate Scholar’s Conference will be accepted from every sub-discipline in the field of communication. We are open to a range of presentation formats including: 

• Competitive Paper Presentations
• Panel Discussions
• Poster Submissions                                     
• Research-in-progress Reports 

ECA USC Submission Guidelines:

Complete the McCroskey/Richmond USC Submission Form. Please CLICK HERE to access the form.  

In ADDITION to the form, you will be asked to submit the following detailed information:

For Competitive Papers: Be certain to submit completed papers as 3 clearly labeled files:

•  A title page following APA guidelines and an abstract of the paper 
• The paper itself (no title page)

For Competitive Posters:

• A title page following APA guidelines (as for a paper)
• A 3 – 5 page description of the research to be depicted, including the nature of the problem, method, data analysis, key findings, recommendations for future research

For Panel Discussions:

• A cover page including panel title, brief description, list of participants
• A 1 – 2 page justification explaining the focus of the panel (common topic of research, common method, common generating research), the choice of participants, abstracts of 50 – 75 words if papers will be presented, if discussion panel, then focus and method of the discussion should be explained, explanation of how the discussion will add to scholarly discourse.

For All others:

• A cover page including panel title, brief description, list of participants
• A brief description of the presentation.
