ECA 2015 Convention - Rhetoric & Public Address IG in collaboration with ASHR - Call for Submissions Reminder

RHETORIC & PUBLIC ADDRESS INTEREST GROUP

* in special collaboration with American Society for the History of Rhetoric (ASHR)
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

2015 Eastern Communication Association 106th Annual Convention
April 22 – 26, 2015
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Submission Deadline: October 15, 2014
“Deliberation: Philadelphia”

With another fall semester in full force, the Rhetoric & Public Address Interest Group and the American Society for the History of Rhetoric (ASHR) would like to remind all interested scholars that the deadline to submit proposals (papers, panels, and other creative programs) for the 106th annual ECA Convention is coming up soon on October 15th, 2014. The Rhetoric & Public Address Interest Group and the American Society for the History of Rhetoric are co-sponsoring at least two panels at ECA’s annual convention this year under the theme “Deliberation: Philadelphia,” in tribute to the convention’s host city. Under that theme, our combined call solicits important scholarship on the nature of deliberation through reflections on the past, present, and future of rhetoric. While papers, panels, and other creative programming proposals (round table discussions, debates, workshop sessions, and symposia) that explore these themes are welcome, we also encourage a wide range of submissions related to the historical, critical, and theoretical exploration of rhetoric in its many iterations.

Due to the unique nature of this year’s call, please pay special attention to the details of the submission process.

Submissions to the Rhetoric & Public Address Interest Group must be sent via e-mail, with attachment(s), to the 2015 Program Planner, Timothy Barney, University of Richmond, ECARhetoric@gmail.com.

Submissions to the Rhetoric & Public Address Interest Group to be co-sponsored with ASHR must be sent via e-mail, with attachment(s), to the 2015 Program Planner, Timothy Barney, University of Richmond, ECARhetoric@gmail.com, as well as the ASHR 2015 Planner, Michelle Gibbons, State University of New York at Delhi, gibbonmm@delhi.edu.

All submissions should include the text “ECA 2015 Submission” in the subject line of the email. In the text of the email, please also indicate if the submission (competitive paper or program/panel) should be considered for A) one of the joint session panels with the American Society for the History of Rhetoric or B) a Spotlight Session.

Please also include any specific requests for technology in the text of the email submission. Note that reasonable requests for technology support will not be met unless they are received by the Program Planner at the time of the paper or program/panel submission. Please see ECA’s technology policy: http://www.ecasite.org/aws/ECA/asset_manager/get_file/18827?ver=100258.

Competitive Papers

Abstracts or incomplete papers are not acceptable in this category, and submitted papers should not have been presented at previous conferences or accepted for publication at the time of submission. Only electronic submissions are allowed, and should be in doc. or docx. form. Submissions of completed papers (no more than 25 pages, excluding title page, abstract, references, and appendices) should include TWO attachments to the email address listed above:

  1. First attachment: A title page with the title of the paper, author’s name, author’s affiliation (for multiple authors, please indicate which will be presenting), mailing address, telephone number, and email address. This title page should also include a 150-200 word abstract of the paper and ECA’s Statement of Professional Responsibility (see below). Please clearly indicate if this is a STUDENT or DEBUT paper in the upper right hand corner of the title page—STUDENT papers refer to ones written by current undergraduate and graduate student submitters and must have student status at time of submission; DEBUT papers refer to those whose authors have not previously presented a paper at a regional, national, or international convention.
  2. Second attachment: The full paper, including references, visuals, tables, appendixes. The first page of the full paper should repeat the title, 150-200 word abstract, and ECA’s Statement of Professional Responsibility (see below). However, no identifying information about the author(s) should be included anywhere in this attachment. Please also indicate (as with the first attachment) if this is a STUDENT or DEBUT paper in the upper right hand corner of the first page of the paper.

Program/Panel Proposals

All program/panel submissions should be sent as ONE attachment in doc. or docx. form, and must include:

  1. A thematic title for the program/panel. It is also helpful if the title includes the type of format that will be used: panel, workshop, round table, symposium, debate etc.
  2. The name of the Chair and Respondent (if any). Note that chairs and respondents are not allowed to serve as panelists. We would also prefer that chairs and respondents not be the same person.
  3. The names, institutional affiliations, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of all participants.
  4. Titles and 150-200 word abstracts for each paper or presentation (if applicable to format chosen). Please make it clear what paper/presentation belongs with what author.
  5. The program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program.
  6. A detailed rationale for the program/panel. The rationale should also make clear what type of format is being used (panel, workshop, round table, symposium, debate, etc.) and why that format was chosen.
  7. ECA’s Statement of Professional Responsibility(see below).

Statement of Professional Responsibility

When submitting a paper or proposal for review, the following statement MUST be included—see the guidelines above on where this statement should be included in submission. Papers and panels without this statement will not be programmed.

In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. If this submission is accepted and programmed, I/we agree to register for the 2015 ECA Convention, pay fees, and present in Philadelphia. I/We understand that presenters with last minute emergencies must make arrangements as possible for an alternate presenter as well as communicate their absences to both the Interest Group Program Planner and ECA VP; “no shows” will be removed from the program.

Please contact the R&PA Interest Group Program Planner, Timothy Barney, ECARhetoric@gmail.com or the ASHR 2015 Planner, Michelle Gibbons, State University of New York at Delhi, gibbonmm@delhi.edu with any further questions.

See you in Philadelphia!
