ECA 2015 Convention - Voices of Diversity (VOD) Interest Group- Call for Submissions - Reminder

Voices of Diversity (VOD) Interest Group

In Conjunction with the
106th Eastern Communication Association Convention

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS

Submission Deadline: October 15, 2014
Submission Email: 2015voicesofdiversity@gmail.com

Deliberation: Philadelphia

The Voices of Diversity Interest Group sends this second call for papers and submissions to the Eastern Communication Association's 106th Annual Convention, which will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At this busy time in the semester and as you are preparing your submissions for the year, the VOD group hopes that a theme so closely aligned with our purpose and mission will encourage you to deliberate with us in Philadelphia.

The purpose of the interest group is to explore the various theories and practices that pertain to the research, teaching, and study of communication within, between, and among diverse communities, especially as these communities are affected and/or marginalized culturally, economically, institutionally, politically, psychologically, and socially because of age, class, disabilities, ethnicity, gender, language, race, religion or sexual orientation. The Voices of Diversity interest group seeks to facilitate dissemination and discussion of such theories and practices within the field of communication studies.

The Voices of Diversity Interest Group invites completed papers, panels, round table discussions, symposiums, and community programs across communication contexts that explore the pivotal role exchanging ideas plays in creating, maintaining, and changing what we communicate and how we communicate it. We encourage works that reenvision deliberation in a technologically advancing, diverse and increasingly connected and fragmented society. Submissions that provide an opportunity for “voices” of various scholars, community members, audience members and the public to engage one another are strongly encouraged. Moreover, if submitters of a panel, round table discussion, symposium or community program believe integrating local media into their programming will enhance their deliberation with an audience, then all participants must give consent (in submission) to participate in a Spotlight Session. All submissions will be reviewed and evaluated through an anonymous, peer-review process. Correspondence regarding the status of submissions will be sent mid-January 2015.

Submission of Completed Papers Should Include:

1. A detachable title page with the title of the paper and the author(s)’ affiliations, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses.

2. The word “Debut” marked on all papers written by authors who have not presented previously at a regional or national convention.

3. A single paragraph abstract (or brief summary) of the paper on the second page.

4. A statement of professional responsibility (see below) on the second page.

Submission of Proposals for Panels, Round Table Discussions, Symposiums, and Community Programs Should Include:

1. A thematic title for the program.

2. Name of the chair and respondent (if applicable). Do not have the chair act as the respondent.

3. Names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and institutional or organizational affiliations of all participants. We strongly recommend participants from different institutions and organizations.

4. Titles and abstracts for each paper or presentation.

5. A program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program.

6. A detailed rationale for the program/panel

7. A statement of professional responsibility (see below)

Submissions must be received by the October 15, 2014 deadline.

Please send your submissions and additional inquiries to Truman R. Keys, Ph.D., at 2015voicesofdiversity@gmail.com

Additional Information

*The following Statement of Professional Responsibility must be included with every submission in order for it to be eligible for review:

Statement of Professional Responsibility

In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. If this submission is accepted and programmed, I/We agree to register for the 2015 ECA Convention, pay fees, and present in Philadelphia. I/We understand that presenters with last minute emergencies must make arrangements as soon as possible for an alternate presenter as well as communicate their absence to the Program Planner; no shows will be removed from the official program.

* Scheduling Requests: Some participants are part of the leadership of more than one Interest Group or need time to set up materials for a Short Course in advance or have other needs that are not apparent from the names  listed in the programmed panels. The ECA Convention Planner can never guarantee that your scheduling requests will be accommodated but very, very early requests (preferably send no later than December 2014) have the best likelihood of being met.

*ADA Requests: Once panels are accepted and I am ready to send out letters, I will ask presenters if accommodations (such as an interpreter) are needed. If a request is made, I will get the information to the ECA Convention Planner immediately. Requests made in submissions are helpful because any notifications made before January 15, 2015 will make such requests far easier to accommodate.

*ECA’s Technology Policy: Equipment rental is very expensive. Therefore, before requesting technology, please read ECA Technology Policy.

* Submissions that do not comply with the guidelines listed above will be returned.

* For additional information about the convention, including short courses and other programming, please see the ECA website.
