A Mysterious Cyberattack Is Completely Erasing Western Digital MyBook Live Drives

For years, Western Digital’s cloud-connected MyBook Live hard drives have been trusted by millions to back up and share their important files. This week, however, MyBook Live and Live Duo owners around the globe have been waking up to find their devices have been completely erased.

It’s a nightmarish scenario. Devices like the MyBook line can hold multiple terabytes of photos, videos and documents. That’s years and years of family photos or important personal or business documents gone with little hope of recovery.

Victimized owners also noticed that the passwords they chose to secure their MyBook Live no longer worked. When they attempted to log in to their devices’ administration web page they greeted by an “invalid password” error. Western Digital’s default “admin” password did not work either.
