FBI warns of sophisticated 'check cooking' scam for easy, undetected theft

NBC Montana

According to the FBI El Paso Field Office, scammers are becoming ever more tech-savvy as they fine-tune their methods to successfully manipulate unsuspecting victims.

Gone are the days of emails that are riddled with grammatical errors and other hallmarks of a dubious scheme that used to be widely publicized by law enforcement groups, the Better Business Bureau and Federal Trade Commission.

Now, in one of their latest efforts to swindle the public, scammers have elevated the practice of check washing to something called “check cooking” or “check baking,” according to FBI El Paso.

It’s much more lucrative, and efficient, and allows a scammer to easily manufacture dozens of checks and deposit them into numerous drop accounts, FBI El Paso said.
