‘Political Rhetoric and Democratic Discourse’

Global Discourse ‘Special Edition’ Issue II

Following the recent success of a Special Edition for Global Discourse on ‘Political Rhetoric and Democratic Discourse’, Dr Roe-Crines is announcing a second issue, which will appear in 2026/27. He is seeking expressions of interest in any dimension of rhetorical theory and political communications practice that apply methods, theories and concepts drawn from the ancient Greek and/or Chinese worlds.

Case-studies can be contemporary or ancient, looking at any aspect of political language using international comparative approaches or single national case studies. They can examine the language of an individual concept (such as conservatism, liberalism, socialism); the means of approaching political discourse (such as the rhetorical styles and impact of a current or historic political actor); a style of political discourse (such as populism); or the rhetorical construction and justifications for a specific policy area (such as the economy, mental health, culture, immigration, or identity).

The interlinking relationship for the papers will be the thematic approaches, which are designed to demonstrate the diverse and rich approaches to rhetorical analyses. The editor of the project, Dr Roe-Crines is happy to discuss ideas with authors as a way of refining methodological approaches. Example articles published in the first issue can be found here. They include pieces by Peter DoreyRichard Johnson & Neil VisalvanichSteven Kerr & Peter Kerr, amongst others.

There will be a workshop at the University of Liverpool in October 2025. If you are interested, please email your abstract directly to Dr Roe-Crines (a.s.crines@liverpool.ac.uk) by 1 August 2025. Plus, Dr Roe-Crines is happy to informally discuss thoughts or ideas for development over Zoom, Teams, or Email prior to submission of an abstract.

Contributors to the first issue are welcome to submit an abstract for the second on a new research topic.
