NIH Releases 2026 Dementia Care and Caregiving Research Summit Report

The National Institute on Aging has released the 2026 Dementia Care and Caregiving Research Summit report, summarizing research priorities identified during the March 2026 summit. The report focuses on the economic effects of dementia, community and academic research partnerships, dementia care interventions, data infrastructure and care coordination. Participants also emphasized the need for research that accounts for quality of life, supports earlier diagnosis and planning, improves access to treatment and services, and helps people living with dementia remain at home when possible.

The summit brought together researchers, federal partners, nonprofit organizations, people living with dementia and care partners to identify gaps in dementia care and caregiving research. Findings will help inform future National Institutes of Health research priorities and updates to federal Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias research milestones. Members can review the full 2026 Dementia Care and Caregiving Research Summit report for the complete research gaps and opportunities identified through the summit.
