Paul Adams, M.D.

AdamsPaul Adams is a native Detroiter.  Born and raised on the lower East Side, he attended Detroit Public Schools from K to 8.  He then attended Bishop Gallagher High School in Harper Woods, playing Varsity Basketball.  Undergraduate studies were at the University of Detroit, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.  While at the University of Detroit, he spent 4 semesters as a rotational Co-op student at Dow Chemical in Midland.  He served as President of the Chemistry Club for 3 semesters and Treasurer of the Engineering and Science Council for 2 semesters.  After a decision that Chemical Industry was not to be his career choice, Paul attended the Wayne State University School of Medicine.  An Internal Medicine Residency followed at Henry Ford Hospital.  After a young lifetime spent in Detroit, Paul completed a Hematology and Oncology Fellowship at the University of Michigan, becoming a faculty member during his final year of fellowship.

After completing his fellowship, Paul spent another 8 years on the faculty of the University of Michigan where he served as the Associate Director of the Adult Bone Marrow Program, Acting Director of Adult Bone Marrow Transplant, and the Director of Inpatient Services.  He performed the first allogeneic bone marrow transplants at the University Hospital.  Paul left the University of Michigan to develop the Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute in Flint, as its Medical Director, and served 9 years in that role.  He is presently the Medical Director of the Adult Hemophilia Program at Hurley Medical Center and the Director of the Outpatient Infusion Clinic at Genesys Regional Medical Center.  Paul Chairs the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at Genesys.  He also serves as the Program Director for the Hematology and Oncology Fellowship Program at Genesys.

Paul joined the Board of Directors at the Michigan Society of Hematology and Oncology 14 years ago and served the Board on the Education Committee for many years, directing the Hematology and Oncology Board Review Course for 3 years.  He served one term as the Board President and continues to serve on the Board as a Past-President.  Paul continues to serve on the Fellows’ Committee and has represented the Society at many meetings with BCBSM and BCN.

Paul met his wife of 32 years, Barbara, while they were both undergraduates at the University of Detroit.  They attended Wayne State University School of Medicine together, and Barbara now practices Pediatrics in the Henry Ford Health System and at Genesys.  They have raised 6 children together, and now have only their youngest, Sarah, at home.  Two sons are presently Residents in the Henry Ford System in Surgery and Internal Medicine.  Two other sons are Pre-Med in undergraduate studies, striving for careers in Medicine.  Sarah is looking forward to going to high school in the fall.

Basketball was the favored sport until the fourth arthroscopic knee surgery convinced him that the cartilage could no longer take the pounding.  The physician's activities now revolve around swimming, kayaking, tennis, and walking.  Leisure activities include reading and travel.  Paul is active in his parish church in Grand Blanc, serving on the Building Committee and Chairing the Education Committee.
