Oncology Changes in CPT 2024 Code Set Include Common Treatments, Lab Tests

The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) 2024 code set will include 230 additions, 49 deletions, and 70 revisions. Although oncologists will not bear the brunt of these updates, key treatments and diagnostic approaches do have changes. Knowing these details can make the difference when it comes to claims being reimbursed or denied.

Oncology highlights include revisions to commonly reported chemotherapy codes, as well as pathology and laboratory test additions. Evaluation and management (E/M) time alterations may also have a beneficial effect in oncology.

“I think these updates are important overall, so that the terms keep up with changes in what we test for or do,” said Kerry A. Rogers, MD, assistant professor of hematology from The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center–The James.

The CPT code set changes go into effect Jan. 1, 2024.
