How to respond to, “That’s not my job.” with our DTX22 Keynote Speaker, Renee Thompson

How often have you heard an employee say, “That’s not my job?” How do you respond? 

You want to handle it in a way that reinforces a professional and respectful work culture, enhances your credibility and authority as a leader and addresses the rudeness of the employee.

Here’s how you do that:

Look this employee in the eye, lean in a bit, and say, When you say, ‘this isn’t my job’ in healthcare where we are all asked to do things beyond our job description for the sake of someone’s family member, it makes me think that maybe healthcare isn’t a good fit for you.

And then reinforce to your staff that “we” make decisions here based on what’s best for the patient first-no matter what-then what’s best for the team, and then ourselves.
