Description Department of Communication Position #1237 The Department of Communication at Western Carolina University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of television broadcasting for fall 2015. Western Carolina University is part of the University of North Carolina system. Located in Cullowhee, NC, WCU is situated in a beautiful valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains, 52 miles west of Asheville and near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. From its 600-acre main campus, through programs in Asheville, at various community colleges and online, WCU serves over 10,000 students. All faculty members participate in regional engagement and support the University's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The Department of Communication is known for its engaged teaching and service learning. Applicants are encouraged to visit the WCU website (www.wcu.edu) and read the university's 2020 Vision and details about the QEP. The Department of Communication offers the B.S. Degree in Communication with concentrations in broadcasting, broadcast sales, journalism and public relations. There are approximately 180 majors overall with about 85 in the broadcasting concentration. All students participate in a professional internship during their senior year. Duties include teaching undergraduate courses in television broadcasting/communication. Taking a collaborative part in overseeing the TV studio, including equipment budget, day-to-day management and studio upgrades. Additional duties include advising communication students, engaging in scholarship, and departmental, institutional, and regional service. Must have one year of university level teaching experience. Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to public engagement through their teaching, service, and scholarship. Applicants must have a Masters degree, or higher, in communication or closely related field and professional television broadcasting experience. Applicants with expertise in Internet, journalism, sports video production, social media, and new technology are highly desirable. Degree must be from an appropriately accredited institution with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the field. To be considered, applicants must apply online.
