29540 can you give us correct documentation for this code. Some of our notes have been rejected not supporting 29540. Thank You
There is no one correct way to document for a strapping- if a procedure is done, there needs to be details on why it was performed on the patient, how it relates to their chief complaint, and other variables with the patients plan of care. Strappings are often a minor service that is inclusive to other major and minor procedures, such as an injection or surgical procedure. If the service is done, whether as a stand-alone procedure or as a component to a more comprehensive procedure, as much detail as possible must be provided.
Lay Description (Code):
The physician or medical professional uses tape to strap a lower extremity. Multiple strips are used to overlap and build support of the affected area. The strips are often placed from one area to another to construct temporary support to the tendons and muscles. Report 29520 if the site taped is the hip; 29530 for the knee; 29540 for the ankle and/or foot; and 29550 for the toes.
Coding Tips
According to CPT guidelines, cast application or strapping (including removal) is only reported as a replacement procedure or when the cast application or strapping is an initial service performed without a restorative treatment or procedure. See "Application of Casts and Strapping" in the CPT book in the Surgery Section, under the Musculoskeletal System. Supplies used when providing this procedure may be reported with HCPCS Level II codes. Do not report 29540 with 29580 or 29581.
