HOW DO I GET AN INSURANCE COMPANY TO PAY A NECESSARY CAST CHANGE WITHIN THE GLOBAL PERIOD OF SURGERY.
The casting may be paid if modifier -58 is added to the code. The CPT modifier indicates that a staged or related procedure is being performed within the global period of another procedure that was covered by the insurance. The modifier can be appended to each new casting and would be subject to reimbursement that would not be considered part of the global surgery package.
However, please note that some insurances, regardless of the modifier, will deny a casting change as included in the global period.
