Please advise which specific insurance companies require authorization for x-rays??
Almost no insurances require prior authorization for x-rays- these services can be provided in conjunction with an office visit or as a standalone service with no reimbursement issues. There are very few plans that require patients to go to a contracted radiology provider (such as some 1199SEIU and Cigna policies) in order for an x-ray to be covered due to provider specialty restrictions that will not cover the imaging when performed by a podiatrist. This should be verified at the time benefits are checked to confirm if they will be covered.
