CHS Member Cooperative in Mankato, Minnesota

CHS member cooperative CFS - Central Farm Service is seeking to hire a Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Wth main offices in Mankato, Owatonna, and Truman, Minnesota, CFS is a full-service grain, agronomy, feed and energy cooperative with 35 locations and $560 million of total sales. The Cooperative operates 4 grain shuttle loading locations, 3 mega fertilizer plants, 4 feed mills and operates refined fuels and propane terminals.

Primary Function:

This position provides leadership for all aspects of the operations and activities of CFS. This position implements the strategic goals and objectives of the organization and gives direction and leadership toward the achievement of the organization’s philosophy, mission, strategy and its annual goals and objectives.

To manage an efficient operation according to the cooperative purpose, within the policy guidelines set by the board of directors; to provide products and services to meet the needs of member producers; to provide leadership and direction that produce local earnings.

Board of Directors:

Totally responsible/accountable to the Board of Directors and as such, carries out board policies and makes policy recommendations when necessary.
Develops and implements a business plan and regularly reports on progress.
Assists the board in execution of its legal obligations and annual insurance review.
Assists in scheduling, arranging board meetings and agenda.
Prepares and presents monthly financial operations and sales reports.

Accounting and Reporting:

Prepares and presents monthly financial reports (Accounts Receivable, Aging, etc.).
Prepares and presents monthly Balance Sheet & Operating Statement.
Prepares and presents a yearly Market Share Analysis of the cooperative trade territory, separated by individual commodity.

Finances:

Prepare capital requirements budget to enable the board to arrange for necessary finances for the organization.
Maintain desirable financial ratios.
Maintain adequate inventory turnover.
Maintain desirable expense ratios.

Planning:

Work out objectives, duties and responsibilities with and for supervisory employees by developing an outline for each job.
Assist supervisory employees in developing objectives, duties, and responsibilities with employees by developing an outline for each job.
Help develop performance standards and determine extent of authority for each supervisory employee in conjunction with job outline.
Make yearly operating and financial budget projection and submit to the board showing monthly breakdowns and make monthly operating reports compared to budget.
Constantly strive for self-development by:
Attending managers association and other management training-type meetings
Attending community and promotional meetings when possible
Keep up-to-date on new trends in merchandising, management and financing
Carry out sales promotions and a coordinated advertising program on all products as planned in budget.
Maintain desirable gross margins.

Supervision & Control:

Appraise and evaluate each supervisory employee’s performance annually, using job outline as basis or guide.
Develop product, sales and technical knowledge among supervisory employees, and assist them in developing this knowledge among all employees.
Select employees according to job requirements stated in outline and on their potential for development.
Replace employees who cannot measure up to job requirements and/or who willfully violate company policy.
Develop and maintain a “Salary Range Program” for all employees.
Provide the opportunities of advancement and management development for employees.
Hold employee meetings to give pertinent information, get employee ideas and develop group interest and enthusiasm for various current programs of importance to the whole group.
Encourage self-development of employees and assist in furthering self-development by taking a personal interest.
Create and maintain an atmosphere in which employees willingly produce at maximum capacity.
Provide top-notch housekeeping and maintenance of all facilities.

Communications:

Develop, to the utmost, sound working relationships with other agricultural companies, and with the business community wherever possible.
Personally, and officially, represent your cooperative by participating in community affairs.
Help plan and report to membership meetings and develop member confidence and understanding of the operation, as well as of cooperative principles.
Communicates to employees through employee meetings and company updates.

Education and Experience:

Degree in Agriculture or Business, MBA preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in Ag industry, minimum 5 years’ experience in Ag Management
Grain operations and commodity risk management knowledge, required
Marketing experience
Supervisory experience: hiring, training, motivating, evaluating and coaching, termination, overseeing supervisory employees and other similar functions.
Financial experience: operating, capital, and cash budgeting; interpreting and analyzing financial statement, accounting ratios, etc.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
