Sen. Boxer Press Briefing and West, Texas, OSHA Fines

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), who chairs the Senate’s environment and public works committee, held a press briefing for members of the press to announce fines issued to the West Fertilizer Company by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

On October 10, 2013, OSHA fined the West fertilizer plant $118,300 for 24 workplace violations, including citations for the safe handling and storing of two important crop inputs for retailers: ammonia nitrate and anhydrous ammonia. The violations also included citations for lack of emergency response plans, fire extinguishers, electrical code, grain handling, and the application of ammonia nitrate explosives and blasting agents as it’s applied to retailers.
