Jennifer Friedman is the co-chair of the CPDA Legislative Committee and a past president. She was a Deputy Public Defender in Los Angeles County for 33 years and served as the Forensic Science Coordinator and Assistant Special Circumstance Coordinator for the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office. She is currently a member of Federal Defender Capital Habeas Unit for the Central District of Los Angeles. She also consults with federal defenders and CJA lawyers on forensic issues through the Federal Resource Counsel Program. Her practice has focused on litigating forensic science, mental health, and expert issues. She has tried over 150 felony jury trials many of which were sexual assaults and homicides involving complex scientific issues and mental state defense. She is a frequent lecturer on the death penalty, challenging forensic evidence and the use of experts in the courts.

Nancy Franklin

Nancy Franklin received her Ph.D. in Psychology from Stanford University in 1989, specializing in cognitive science and human memory. She served from 1989 to 2019 on the faculty at Stony Brook University, where her lab focused on errors in human cognition, including those related to eyewitness identification. She has consulted as an memory and ID expert in several hundred trial and post-conviction cases around the country and has increased her involvement in the justice system following her retirement from SBU. Dr. Franklin regularly gives lectures for law students, trial attorneys and judges across the U.S., as well as to the broader public, about how research on human memory, decision making, and social influence can be applied within the criminal justice system.

Katherine Judson is the Executive Director of the Center for Integrity in Forensic Sciences. She brings with her to the organization her lifelong, passionate support of justice, fairness, and civil rights causes. She previously served as the SBS/AHT Litigation Coordinator for the Wisconsin Innocence Project, where she coordinated strategic litigation efforts in science-dependent cases, trained lawyers, consulted on medically complex cases, taught law students, and engaged in direct representation of clients wrongfully convicted of child abuse and homicide. Earlier in her career, she served as the Innocence Network Shaken Baby Syndrome Litigation Fellow and as a trial attorney with the New Mexico Public Defender Department, where she represented clients facing felony charges, including capital crimes, and specialized in cases involving complicated forensic evidence. Her background in science–prior to law school–includes a bachelor’s degree in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and work as a research assistant in a pathology laboratory at the University. She has spoken before the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, the Innocence Network, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and other law schools and professional organizations on topics related to forensic science.
