EM Residency Spotlight

Meet the EM Residents at SOMC!Submitted by the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Southern Ohio Medical Center

Very good things are happing in the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Southern Ohio Medical Center (OU-HCOM). SOMC EM residency is rurally located in Southern Ohio. Our ED does not operate like a typical small town hospital; this benefits our residents by giving them an unopposed status with a plethora of procedures due to a paucity of other hospital residency specialties. The department operates like a well-oiled machine, from techs, to nurses, to residents, to attendings. With four residents per class, the hospital gets to know each resident well, and embraces teaching throughout the services.

A late March snowstorm made for a challenging winter at SOMC!Our program has a strong community presence by volunteering their time at SOMC sponsored events, such as, the American Triple–T, a triathlon held locally. They also volunteer to do free sports physicals with SOMC’s community health department, which has them going to local schools. This is a great opportunity for the residents to interact with the community outside of the ER, and it is a wonderful benefit for our local schools.

SOMC residents with EM Residency Program Director, Dr. Tom CarterOur program produces highly trained, confident emergency medicine physicians, due to a teaching environment that has a lot of one on one interaction with attendings, enjoyable working environment, and a wide variety of procedure opportunities. Overall there is a team player atmosphere, but not just among the residents. It extends to nurse, attendings, and clerical staff as well. In addition, we have a curriculum that includes an administration and “pretend attending month” for our senior residents. This gives them an opportunity to see and experience the administrative aspect of running an emergency department. Our residents feel prepared to not only be great EM physicians, but also gain the confidence and experience to be department leaders once they have transitioned to an attending role.

What’s being said about our residents:

“The quality of our residents is excellent, having the program keeps us on our toes, we enjoy a great working relationships among the ED nurse, residents and physicians.”

“The residency has had a positive influence on the physician and nursing groups to emphasize best practices, team players, and actively achieving departmental goals.”

“The residents are knowledgeable, approachable, and interact well with the staff.”

“As a medical student the EM rotation requires me to stretch my brain, due to the wide variety of cases, it’s fast paced, fun, and everyone works together to teach”
