Yesterday afternoon the National Council on Disability (NCD) hosted a two-hour virtual roundtable supporting the need for Medicare coverage of Power Seat Elevation and Standing Systems. The 17 speakers (including NCART) provided a compelling presentation sharing detailed information and encouraging CMS to grant the submitted request for coverage.
Close to 400 attendees joined to listen to the perspectives of legislators, people who utilize the technology, clinicians and researchers, and legal and policy experts. Extensive comments and information were shared covering reduced medical complications, enhanced independence, health outcomes research, legal and policy implications, and the need for improved equity in the healthcare system.
A recording of the presentation will be published in the next few days and we will share that as soon as it is available.
As follow up, the NCD asked stakeholders to share their perspective and support by submitting comments via email to publiccomment@ncd.gov now through August 12. People are encouraged to share their thoughts on why these systems are necessary and should be covered. The collective comments will be forwarded to CMS.
Additionally, the ITEM Coalition announced the opening of the dedicated advocacy website that we have discussed in prior updates. You can now visit www.Rise4Access.org to get related background information, educational materials, and access a petition to sign in support of CMS granting coverage. More information will be posted there as we move ahead.
So what’s next? We are awaiting the next official step in the request for coverage process, which is CMS formally opening a 30-day comment period allowing the public to submit comments. Our expectation is this will take place sometime this month. As soon as that happens, we will be sharing related details and instructions. It will be important we get strong participation from all CRT stakeholders.
