CMS is proposing to expand prior authorization to other areas of DME such as PAP and RAD devices, hospital beds, negative pressure wound therapy, some group support surfaces, power wheelchairs, and much more.
Prior authorization started in September 2012 with PMDs under the prior authorization demonstration project. The project is currently in seven states and is scheduled to run through September 2015.
The demonostration project is generally doing well according to both CMS and the DME supplier community. As such, CMS may possibly extend the program to 12 additional state including Ohio.
