Stations will include:
- Pests & Disease Walkabout with Joe Boggs - The primary focus of this walk will be on pests and diseases and will include all management options based on integrated pest and disease management strategies. However, it is also a diagnostic training, meaning all facets of tree health will be on the table, from environmental to physiological issues. Participants will be expected to provide input, sharing their knowledge gained through experience.
CEUs: Ohio Pesticide Recertification 1.0 Core, .5 6A
- Proper Tree Planting with Bob Meoak, Joe Puperi, and Alistair Reynolds - Learn about the proper techniques for the installation of trees following the newly updated Sample Ohio Tree Planting Specifications. Students will learn how to apply this standard to their everyday tree-planting assignments. Participants may receive a certificate of completion and appear on the Chapter’s consumer site, Trees4Ohio.org.
- Soil Science with Zack Shier - In this field-based class, Zack will go over some of the basics of soil makeup and how urban soils differ from forest soils. Understanding the relationship between mineral soil, organic matter and soil biology is important for arborists to understand. Healthy soil can help reduce insect and disease pressures, create longer living and more resilient urban trees. Zack will go over lab-based soil analyses, show how a PHC truck can apply soil-based treatments, and review modern products for tree nutrition and soil health.
- Interactive Tree & Plant ID Walkabout with Brady Holko - Walk with us as we learn how to identify some of the trees in our park.
There will also be two half-day sessions:
- Aerial Rescue with Evan Beck & Jacob Nau - Join Jacob and Evan for an interactive Aerial Rescue Training course. This hands-on class will focus on the fundamentals of effective Aerial Rescue in Trees. Scene size-up (assessment), critical information to relay to dispatchers/first responders, techniques for gaining access to victims, patient assessment and care/packaging, and decision-making concepts to aid rescuers are all topics that will be covered during the class. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring their own PPE and climbing equipment to participate in the training.
- Tree Felling Notches & Techniques with Brian Goodall - In the course, we will cover chainsaw safety, the 5-step felling plan, notches, and back cuts. You will need chainsaw protection (chaps or pants, helmet, eye and ear protection, work gloves, and boots). We will be running chainsaws, so please come prepared for the weather.
